Yes, you can. Please note though that it’s mandatory to hire the Dog Package, and that dogs aren’t allowed in the tents. Also, dogs can only travel with a maximum of 2 people, since the dog ‘hammock’ renders the rear seats unusable for other purposes. Please also refer to the Outdoor Access Code for guidance with respect to the responsible handling of dogs in Scotland’s wilderness.

We are at your disposal, from your first email inquiry to when you hand your keys back. There will be a full handover running through all of the equipment and we provide a full user guide which gives step by step instructions and tips on driving off-road. Handover normally takes between 20-30 mins.

Is mileage limited?

No, but we do charge 40p a mile over 180 miles a day (averaged over the rental period), it’s highly unusual that during a trip you get anywhere near this unless you head across to parts of Europe.

Can I take the Defender outside of mainland UK?

Yes, but we need to know if you’re going to cross any water in advance by prior arrangement.

Can we take the vehicles out to the Scottish islands??

Absolutely, and we thoroughly recommend that you do. Wild camping opportunities are usually numerous on the islands. A benefit of our vehicles over motorhomes is that they qualify for cheaper ferry charges: they are typically the same rate as a standard car.

How many people can you fit in each tent?

Our Howling Moon tents are 1.4m wide, slightly bigger than a standard double bed and can take 2 adults and a child or 3 children sleeping together in one tent. Each tent is accessed by their own set of ladders which are separate from each other offering excellent privacy.

How long does the tent take to set up?

Opening the roof tents takes approximately 5-10 minutes each, and closing takes roughly the same amount of time. You can leave your bedding inside when closing.

You’ll find it easier each time you erect and take down the tents.

How long does it take to put up the Howling Moon half moon awning?

It takes around 10 minutes to put up and the same to take down, it fits easily onto the underside of the tent by zip and can be adjusted up and down depending on the weather by adjustable poles. Extremely secure and gives great protection.

How far can you travel on a full tank of fuel?

All our vehicles run on diesel and a full tank of fuel provides a range of around 450 miles. If you’re looking at heading off into the Highlands and Islands we would advise you to fill up when your tank gets down to around a 3rd full, fuel stations in the Highlands tend to be a bit further apart or sometimes closed when you wouldn’t expect them to be.

Can the equipment stand up to high winds and rain?

Our tents and awning are the best you can get. Howling Moon are based in South Africa and are made to stand extreme weather conditions. They are heavy duty tents and are extremely waterproof and can stand a battering by the winds. We do advise our clients to use their initiative and in extremely adverse weather, possibly look at a hotel or B&B. The Howling Moon awning performs particularly well in strong winds, you may need to lower it depending on conditions.

Is it possible to take a rigid canoe?

Not with roof tents , but if you go with vehicle only option then you can attach to roof rack.

What are the earliest and latest possible collection/return times?

Collection and return can be arranged for any time between 09:00 and 18:00, 7 days a week.

How do you calculate the hire charge?

The hire charge will depend upon the time of year and the duration of your hire. Please see the Hire Rates page for details. We calculate according to the times that you opt to collect and return the vehicle. So for example, if you collect at 09:00 on the 1st of the month, and return at 16:00 on the 6th of the month, that would equate to 5.3 days. The basic hire charge would then be 5.3 times the hire rate.

There’s enough space to fit luggage for a family of 5, but of course you need to be sensible remember this is not a summer holiday where you need a change of clothes every night etc. etc. There’s enough space for 4 holdalls with the standard equipment, if you decide on a number of add ons like, tent, Kayak etc. then of course the space with reduce. Please don’t bring rigid suite cases.
