FAQ’S

How many people can sleep in the vehicles?

Up to five. Our Defenders can be fitted with up to two roof tents. Each has a memory foam queen-size mattress. We offer family-friendly accommodations. For example, two roof tents can very comfortably host 4 adults or 2 adults and 3 children. Alternatively, our two-tent option is perfect for a small groups

Can you cater for disabilities

Absolutely. We have a number of options available for individuals or groups with disabilities. Unfortunately we can’t cater for every circumstance yet. It’s best to discuss this with us so we can offer the best solutions. Please give us a call, chat with us using our online chat or use our contact form to send us a message.  If you are getting in touch using a form would you kindly give us an indication of the person or persons disability and whether this affects a main or secondary driver so we can best prepare solutions for you.

Can I bring my dog with me?

Yes, you can. Please note though that it’s mandatory to hire the Dog Package, and dogs aren’t allowed in the tents. Also, dogs can only travel with a maximum of 2 people, since the dog ‘hammock’ renders the rear seats unusable for other purposes. Please also refer to the Outdoor Access Code for guidance with respect to the responsible handling of dogs in England and Scotland.

Within our dog pack we provide a safety harness. By law it is necessary to ensure your dog is appropriately secured when traveling.

What's included in the price?
Everything you need for your adventure. We have kept extras to a minimum and included just about everything in the daily rate. So you will get your vehicle, 2 x roof tents, awning, bedding, shower, fridge, stove, crockery, cutlery, pots and pans, Satnav/GPS, CB Radio, hot water bottle, blankets, outdoor chairs and table, gas, full fuel tank, USB Chargers and much much more – see our full list in Gear.

We also have a wide range of equipment you can hire depending on your adventure including – Fire Pit, BBQ, Pizza Oven, bike racks, hammocks, Kayak’s and more – see  our full list in Gear. If there is anything else then please just ask and we will try our best to accommodate.

Is insurance included in the price?

Yes, our vehicles are insured for drivers who have held a driving licence for a minimum of 2 years aged 25 – 65. See our full Terms here

Do the vehicles have toilets?
We provide a portable one and a shovel –  depends on what type of view you want as to which one you use:)
How much guidance and support is provided?
We are at your disposal, from your first email inquiry to when you hand your keys back. There will be a full handover running through all of the equipment and we provide a full user guide which gives step by step instructions and tips on driving off-road. Handover normally takes between 20-30 mins.
Is mileage limited?
No, but we do charge 40p a mile over 180 miles a day (averaged over the rental period), it’s highly unusual that during a trip you get anywhere near this unless you head across to parts of Europe.
Are there supermarkets near your location?
Depending which way you’re going there are major supermarkets in both Morpeth (6 miles) Morrisons, Lidl, Marks & Spencer and Ponteland (7 miles) Waitrose, Local Sainsbury’s. There is also a local shop 3 miles away.
Can I take the Defender outside of mainland UK?
Yes, but we need to know if you’re going to cross any water in advance by prior arrangement.
Can we take the vehicles out to the Scottish islands??
Absolutely, and we thoroughly recommend that you do. Wild camping opportunities are usually numerous on the islands. A benefit of our vehicles over motorhomes is that they qualify for cheaper ferry charges: they are typically the same rate as a standard car.
How many people can you fit in each tent?
Our Howling Moon tents are 1.4m wide, slightly bigger than a standard double bed and can take 2 adults and a child or 3 children sleeping together in one tent. We base all rentals on accommodating 4 adults in 2 roof tents but if you have young children you may consider 1 adult sleeping with 2 children in each tent – we don’t recommend a capacity of more than 5 in total. Each tent is accessed by their own set of ladders which are separate from each other offering excellent privacy.
How long does the tent take to set up?
Opening the roof tents takes approximately 5-10 minutes each, and closing takes roughly the same amount of time. You can leave your bedding inside when closing.

You’ll find it easier each time you erect and take down the tents.

How long does it take to put up the Howling Moon half moon awning?
It takes around 10 minutes to put up and the same to take down, it fits easily onto the underside of the tent by zip and can be adjusted up and down depending on the weather by adjustable poles. Extremely secure and gives great protection.
How far can you travel on a full tank of fuel?

All our vehicles run on diesel and a full tank of fuel provides a range of around 400 miles. If you’re looking at heading off into the Highlands and Islands we would advise you to fill up when your tank gets down to around a 3rd full, fuel stations in the Highlands tend to be a bit further apart or sometimes closed when you wouldn’t expect them to be.

Can the equipment stand up to high winds and rain?
Our tents and awning are the best you can get. Howling Moon are based in South Africa and are made to stand extreme weather conditions. They are heavy duty tents and are extremely waterproof and can stand a battering by the winds. We do advise our clients to use their initiative and in extremely adverse weather, possibly look at a hotel or B&B. The Howling Moon awning performs particularly well in strong winds although you may need to lower it depending on conditions.
Is it possible to take a rigid canoe?
Not with roof tents , but if you go with our vehicle only option then you can attach it to the roof rack. We would not provide fixings for attaching items such as this – this would be your responsibility.
What are the earliest and latest possible collection/return times?

Collection and return can be arranged for any time between 2pm and 11am respectively, 7 days a week. If those timings aren’t suitable please get in touch and we will try to accommodate your needs

How much luggage can we bring?
There’s enough space to fit luggage for a family of 4, but of course you need to be sensible. Remember this is not a summer holiday where you need a change of clothes every night. There’s enough space for 4 holdalls with the standard equipment, if you decide on a number of add ons like, tent, Kayak etc. then space for luggage will reduce. Please don’t bring rigid suit cases.
What are the age restrictions for drivers?

Our insurers require that drivers of our vehicles are no younger than 25 years old, and no older than 75 years old: they will consider making exceptions for people outside this range, but it will require specific approval, and it’s entirely at their discretion whether or not to grant it. An additional premium may also be applicable if approved.

  1. What’s the minimum age for driving the Land Rovers?
Our standard minimum age in line with our insurance policy is 25, however we are happy to accept drivers over 21 with amended excess terms. Please note that drivers must have held a full UK driving licence for at least 1 year if aged 25, or 2 years if between 21-24. The security deposit is £1000 for those aged 25+, £1250 for those aged 23-24 and £1500 for those aged 21-22. This is held on your card for the duration of the trip and released upon safe return of the vehicle and kit in the condition it was hired out in.

Please review our full Terms here

Which driving licences do you accept?
Our insurers will readily accept most UK, EU, US, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand driving licences without prior referral. Other nationalities of licence may also be used, but will generally require our insurers approval first. International licences are also acceptable. In all cases, drivers must have held their licence for at least 2 years.
I have points on my licence - can I still hire a vehicle from you?

Our insurance dictates that so long as you have a maximum of 3 points for either a speeding or parking offence, you can hire one of our vehicles. You must also not have been involved in more than one motoring accident or claim within the preceding three years. Please review our full Terms here

Can we smoke in the vehicle or the roof tents?

Smoking is not permitted in the vehicles or within the roof tents or closed awnings.

Please refer to our full Terms here
